The American Socialist
Introduction: the American Socialist magazine co-edited by George Clarke, Harry Braverman and Bert Cochran represented the one of the first attempts by Marxists to come to terms with a post-WWII paradigma. This meant, first of all, dealing with some of the new realities of the American economy. This article from the October, 1954 issue attempts to analyze the significance of automation and its impact on the unions. Computers were a recent innovation and something of a novelty in American society and culture. The movie Desk Set was released about this time and featured computer expert Spencer Tracy trying to foist a ‘Braniac’ on the anxious employees of a company, out of whose ranks Katherine Hepburn emerges as neo-Luddite rebel. The article also considers a 1954 version of the ‘TINA’ phenomenon, which in those days reflected itself as runaway shops in the American south. The failure of the trade union bureaucracy to deal effectively with this problem has not disappeared, as demonstrated by their inability to cope with such threats in the framework of today’s’ ‘globalization.’
Finally, a word on Bert Cochran. His knowledge of American trade unions came from deep personal experience. He became a leader of the left-wing of the UAW shortly after moving to the Midwest from his native New York. in the 1930s, people with talent and revolutionary principles could emerge as mass leaders in no time at all. I suspect that it will not be too long when we will be facing similar favorable circumstances.
Scanning using Holt Labor Library’s (San Francisco) original bound volumes of American Socialist was done by the Riazanov Library Project (San Pablo, CA and Brooklyn, NY)
