New York – At 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 27, about 15 thugs from Workers Viewpoint Organization (WVO) and Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) carried out a fascist attack on members of the Mun Yick organization.
Before entering Mun Yick’s office in Chinatown, the thugs cut the phone wires. Wearing steel helmets and carrying lead pipes, knives and sticks, they broke down the door, beat people and tore up furniture and equipment. The gangsters broke Sau Guen Chan’s left hand (former chairman of the NY-AAFE), cracked Kai Low’s head and injured Jung-tse Leung, sending all three to the hospital. They also attempted to steal a Chinese typewriter.
The police arrived at the office, scaring off the thugs. Witnesses stated that at least three of those who ran away are members of the NY-AAFE steering committee. Three others were arrested.
Mun Yick was formed earlier this year, mainly by people who had left AAFE in January 1979, over disagreements with the work of that organization. WVO/AAFE on various occasions have threatened the people who left and their families with physical injury.
While WVO and AAFE sneak around and pretend to be friends and even “leaders” of the people’s struggles, this incident only exemplifies the true fascist nature of these groups. The gangster tactics that they so easily stoop to will not be tolerated and will serve to heighten vigilance against WVO and AAFE, which have nothing in common with what is progressive and revolutionary.
