“THE Anti-Landlord!” cries a Lady, “What's to be done
without Landlords?” Why to be sure Madam, if, when the Landlords fly
away they should carry all the land with them, I don't know what we should do.
But if fortunately they should leave Terra Firma behind them, then we must
even do the best we can without them. To enquire into the Possibility of doing
without so expensive and burthensome a Class, is the main Design of this
Paper. “But” replies the Lady hastily, “it is an Attack of
such a Nature and so unprovoked on the most harmless Set of People, that it
appears more like Malice than a Desire of the Public Good to bring forward
such a Discussion.” Well, Madam, be that as it may, it is high Time that
Landlordism be enquired into, and so let Baal plead for himself, he shall have
a fair Trial. He is a God that is not only well qualified of himself to plead
his own Cause, but is also richly able to hire a Host of mercenary Advocates.
If the Principles and Practices of Religion and Government of every Kind are
freely and even rudely handled, shall the Principles and Practices of
Landlordism which concerns us all more nearly than any Thing remain untouched?
Forbid it Justice and Humanity. Forbid it Reason and Philosophy! The Day of
Judgment is come and “the Axe is laid to the Root of the Tree, and every
Tree therefore which bringeth not forth good Fruit shall be hewn down and cast
into the Fire.”
