Uri Avnery was an Israeli writer, journalist, politician, and activist. A member of the Irgun as a teenager and a veteran of the 1948 Palestine war, he cofounded the left-wing political party HaOlam HaZeh - Koah Hadash in 1965 and sat for two terms in the Knesset (1965-1974 and 1979-1981).
